Please check back to our website for more information or if you are a Fitness Center member please make sure the staff have your cell phone or email on file.
Dear Friends of the Newark Senior Center,
On June 1, 2021, Carla Grygiel will celebrate her 15th year of serving as the Newark Senior Center’s Executive Director. After fearlessly leading the Center through the many challenges of this past year it is more important than ever that we recognize Carla for all the hard work, time and love she puts into being our Director.
Carla’s time at the Center has included overseeing several major capital projects including a major kitchen expansion, updating our adult day care space and transitioning it into our Meeting of Minds program, two pool renovations and most recently updating our main lobby, classrooms and Evergreen Room. When not managing one of these projects, she is supervising over 20 full and part time staff and handling a $2.8 million budget.
With all the administrative tasks Carla accomplishes on a daily basis she still makes our members her number one priority. Her door is always open whether its for a simple chat or to help someone find a ride to a doctors appointment. She takes the time to visit longtime members who are no longer able come to the Center or may be spending some time in the hospital. She calls to check on members who have recently lost a spouse. Carla is also a founding member of our Legacy Society and a monthly donor.
If you would like to show your appreciation to Carla there are a few ways you can help.
Thank you in advance for your help and generosity. We know Carla will appreciate it. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at jfeinberg@newarkseniorcenter.com.
Sincerely,
Jessica Feinberg
Development Director

April 20, 2020
Dear Friends,
We have passed the 1 month mark of self-isolation. How are you all doing? Is there anything we can be doing for you? Please let us know. If you have suggestions of interesting links, videos or other activities that are worth sharing in future emails please email us at nsc@newarkseniorcenter.com.
If you are like us the days of the week and month are probably starting to blur together, but there is one thing that my staff and I cannot let pass by without recognizing. This week would normally be Spring Flea Market week for us. Today the book tent would be going up and the furniture would begin to be put away to make room for all the “stuff”. Although the staff might not miss the exhaustion of this week, we do miss the way the NSC community comes together to support our mission through this event. I hope you will take some time this week to check out our Facebook page, we have a series of posts related to the Flea Market through the years.
We host our flea market twice a year, every April and October. They are our biggest fundraisers, missing one means a loss of $25,000 to the Center. If you are a regular shopper at the flea market we hope you might consider how much you typically spend on your treasures (I know for me that is about $100, unless it’s a really good furniture year!) and make a contribution to the Center. You can easily contribute by clicking here.
We have another full week of exercise planned with Hunter, Bill and Julissa. The schedule and workout plan for Hunter’s workouts is listed below.
We know a lot of you miss the games you play at the Center, pinochle, bridge, mah jongg, canasta, bingo, to name a few. Our Program Director, Katie, developed a bingo game you can play at home. You’ll find the game below. When you complete five squares in a row let us know by emailing nsc@newarkseniorcenter.com or messaging us on Facebook and you will be entered into a drawing for a free annual membership. The deadline for entries is May 15th and you can enter up to five times. Good luck!
As always please let us know if there is anything you need.
Sincerely, Carla
P.S. A very special thanks to those who have made a special donation to the Center as a result of the additional income of the stimulus checks.

March 31, 2020
Good Morning Friends,
I only have a few updates this week.
Our staff is continuing to add content to Facebook to keep you busy at home. Hunter and Dr. Bill Shearer have hosted several wonderful live workouts. If you have been having trouble accessing the workouts follow the link below for more specific instructions.
How to Access Facebook Live Workouts
With the new month starting tomorrow, you would usually be receiving the Newark Senior Center newsletter in the mail within the next few days. I am sure you can imagine with the cancelation of so many activities the April newsletter would be quite slim. In an effort to save money we decided not print the April newsletter. We will continue to keep you updated on when the Center will re-open and programming will resume through email, as well as on our website and Facebook page.
If you are interested, we have put some puzzles on a table outside of the south entrance of the Center. They are available on a first come, first serve basis and we suggest only stopping by if you are out already. Please follow safe practices and wait in your car if there is someone else already at the table and be aware that we will not accept any returns of these puzzles, they are yours to keep. Also, please only take one so that there are enough available for everyone who wants one.
Please let us know if there is anything you need. I hope you and your families are doing well.
Best, Carla
PS. For those of you who know her, here is a picture of Misty missing all of her NSC friends.
First, you need to log into your Facebook account. You do need to have a Facebook account to see these videos.
Then, search for the Newark Senior Center in the Facebook search bar.
When you arrive at the NSC Facebook page, click on Videos on the left side of the screen.
On the video page, if there is a live video going on it should be the first video with a little red live box in the top right corner of the video. You can also find past live videos here to re-watch anytime you like.
Feel free to email us at nsc@newarkseniorcenter.com if you need more assistance. We would be happy to help you.
Dear Friends,
It has been quite a week. I know we are all cautiously concerned by the ever-changing landscape. I wanted to provide a brief update and of course many thanks.
Thanks to our unbelievably dedicated Food Services Staff who have continued to prepare and administer our Meals on Wheels delivery. We are so fortunate to have a very dedicated group of volunteers who are delivering meals each day. We have made changes to the way we deliver meals, safeguarding our volunteers as well as our homebound seniors.
Thanks to our new cleaning staff who have been doing an incredible job deep cleaning and sanitizing many areas of the building. They even cleaned the billiard balls!
Our staff is working diligently to provide regular updates on facebook and our website. In the coming weeks we will be adding content like exercise classes, fitness and potentially sanity tips. But, now that spring is upon us – it is also a great time to open the windows, bring in the fresh air and also go out and enjoy a walk or just a little time outside. Breathe, enjoy the daffodils, hyacinth and crocus; maybe even do a little gardening.
Thanks to those of you who have made a special donation to help us get through this. Our expenses continue and I am committed to ensuring that our staff continues to get paid.
As you know we have cancelled the April flea market, it will not be rescheduled as the logistics of doing it “when we can” are very challenging. This is an automatic $25,000 loss to our budget. So much planning and effort goes into that effort before the first donation is even taken. There are many other worthwhile nonprofits that would be happy to put your household items to good use.
I know many of you miss coming to the center. Please know that we miss you as well. It is a very quiet place without the buzz of members chatting, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
If you have needs or concerns, please call 211 or you are welcome to call a staff member at the NSC and we will do what we can to help. We are here checking voicemail and email.
Take care of yourself, your family and your neighbors.
Carla
P.S. I know many of you are concerned about taxes. The IRS has extended the tax filing deadline until July 15th. We will keep you posted as to the efforts of our volunteer AARP tax preparers.
